Biography

One of the most multitalented artists of her generation, Elda is currently coach, pianist and staff conductor at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and has performed with many of the world’s greatest in classical music. Her talent came out as a child prodigy playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.1 at the age of only 11 with the Albanian National Orchestra. She graduated a few years later with the highest marks in Torino with Remo Remoli and perfected her studies in Paris with Claude Helffer. Her intense activity as a soloists, chamber musician and accompanist took her quickly around Europe.

 

In the 2024-25 season she will appear on prestigious stages as a conductor: In June 2024 she will debut at the Philharmonie Berlin (Kammermusiksaal) conducting the Konzertchor Münster and the Eugene Concert Choir with Charles Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass as part of the series of concerts “Choral Celebrations”. In April of this year the distinguished Rame Lahaj International Opera Festival invited Elda to conduct a gala opera concert at the St. George Theatre in New York.

 

Committed to developing new generations of artists, she holds masterclasses and courses around theworld. In November 2023 she worked for the Steinway Hall in Dubai in an international seminar foryoung singers. In August this year she will be conducting Strauss Elektra within the Dramatic Voice Program in Berlin. Furthermore, Elda guests every year as coach and teacher in masterclasses in Italy such as Portacomaro and Ischia.

 

Elda Laro’s long collaboration with the Deutsche Oper Berlin has seen her perform several times at the Tischlerei Hall. There, she recently conducted two world premieres: Lieder von Vertreibung und Nimmerwiederkehr by Bernhard Gander (also performed at the Munich Biennale) in 2022, and BETA by Dariya Maminova in 2024. In the same hall she will conduct the whole production of Die lustigen Nibelungen by Oscar Straus in March 2025.

 

In April this year she will perform the Burleske for piano and orchestra by Richard Strauss with the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Later in June she will be back at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with a chamber music programme including Bartok’s Contrasts Trio.

 

Symphonic engagements this season will see Elda conduct the Kosovo Philharmonic Orchestra in Pristina in a symphonic and vocal programme starring soprano Elbenita Kajtazi, and in autumn 2025 the Tirana Opera Theatre Orchestra in a concert within the “German October”, a series of cultural events curated by the German Embassy in Tirana.

 

Her particular attention for Belcanto brought Elda to international stages such as the Amsterdam National Opera in 2023 assisting Enrique Mazzola in Maria Stuarda and conducting chorus and stage rehearsals, to the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Tirana conducting L’elisir d’amore and Don Pasquale in 2021, and to the Salzburger Festspiele next season assisting Antonello Manacorda in Maria Stuarda.

 

A programme entirely dedicated to Bellini will be performed in December 2024 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with Elda Laro as a pianist, string quartet and soloists of the ensemble.
